Isabel Dalhousie thinks often of friends, sometimes of lovers, and occasionally of chocolate.

As a philosopher she is certain of where she stands. But real life is, well, perhaps a bit more challenging – particularly when it comes to her feelings for Jamie, the man who should have married her niece Cat.

And further disturbance is in store. Standing in for Cat at her delicatessen, Isabel meets a customer who has recently had a heart transplant and is now plagued by unfamiliar memories that cannot be rationally explained. Isabel is intrigued. So intrigued that she finds herself rushing headlong into another risky investigation.
