The Idea of Heat in Glasgow is a striking new piece of music by Fergus Hall, based on words by the novelist, Alexander McCall Smith. This is its first performance, under the direction of Harold Thalange. The words, specially written for setting by Fergus, explore the notion of heat in its various manifestations. The title is a play on the poem by Wallace Stevens, The Idea of Order at Key West.
Alexander McCall Smith commissioned Fergus Hall to write this after he had heard an earlier orchestral piece that the composer had based on his Portuguese Irregular Verbs novels.
This premiere of The Idea of Heat in Glasgow is shared with the launch of Alexander McCall Smith’s latest novel My Italian Bulldozer. This stand-alone novel, set in Italy, is published in the UK by Polygon. At the event, there will be a conversation on stage between the author and Rosemary Goring of The Herald before The Idea of Heat in Glasgow is performed by instrumentalists and singers from the University of Glasgow.
