| | | | | | | Botswana is a country that enjoys choral singing. One of the most popular pursuits there is participation in choirs, and choir competitions are a regular feature of the weekends. This should not surprise us too much: anybody who knows that part of Africa will be aware of the remarkable singing ability which so many people there have; even little children seem to have the ability to hold a good note. Alexander McCall Smith has long taken an interest in the musical scene in Botswana. On each of his regular visits to Botswana he has sponsored a concert to coincide with the visit, and this has usually featured strongly local singers. He has also supported musical training programmes.
Now, in collaboration with David Slater, a well-known music teacher and performer in Gaborone who was for many years director of the Gaborone arts festival, known as the Maitisong Festival, Alexander McCall Smith has established a tiny opera house just outside Gaborone. This will provide a venue for the production of one or two small-scale operas each year, giving local singers a chance to show their talents and bringing opera to an audience that may not have yet had the chance to experience it. The opera house is being managed on a day-to-day basis by David Slater.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Opera House is accommodated in an old garage converted for the purpose. During the day it is a restaurant, serving breakfast and lunch at tables set out under shady trees on the terrace (see the menu, with its dishes named after characters in the books). It has a tiny white van (see picture) and an enthusiastic staff. Two opening concerts will be held on the 21 and 22 June 2008. The first production of a full-length opera will probably be undertaken at the end of the year or early in 2009. But the opera house is already open for business and welcomes visitors to the restaurant. If you are visiting Botswana it is an essential port of call!
How can I help the No. 1 Ladies’ Opera House? Obviously this tiny opera house is being run on a wing and a prayer. Contributions will be used to support productions and to pay for tickets for those who otherwise could not afford to see an opera. If you wish to support this good cause please contact Mrs Lesley Winton, administrator of The Friends of the No. 1 Ladies’ Opera House, at the following email address: opera@mccallsmith.com
How do I join the Friends of the No. 1 Ladies’ Opera House? You can become a Friend of the opera house free of charge. You will receive an occasional electronic newsletter with news about the opera house and information on forthcoming events. To join, please write to the above email address.
